How to Beat the Trap
Notice your first answer and then distrust it. Tricky riddles are engineered so that something plausible arrives fast - that arrival is the trap, not the solution. The riddle is counting on you to stop thinking the moment you feel satisfied.
Go back and check your answer against every line, not most of them. There's almost always one clause your first guess can't explain, and that clause is the actual riddle.
Watch for words doing two jobs: a "letter" that isn't mail, a "bark" that isn't a dog, "left" that means remaining rather than direction. Once you start reading for the second meaning, tricky riddles get much less tricky.
The Best Way to Use Them
One at a time, on someone who thinks they're good at riddles. Tricky riddles are wasted in bulk - the pleasure is in the confident wrong answer, and you only get that once per person per riddle.
They're the natural middle round of a quiz: harder than the openers, but never the dead end that a genuinely difficult riddle can become. The answer always feels obvious in hindsight, which keeps a losing team cheerful.
Cross with Hard if your crowd is too good, or with Kids for the same mechanism at a gentler setting - children love catching an adult out with one of these.
