110+ Cruise Riddles with Answers

A cruise ship is a small town that happens to float, and these riddles wander all over it: the jogging track that finishes before the buffet opens, the bridge game that claims a corner of the lounge every sea afternoon, the pool that fills up the closer you get to the equator. Underneath the holiday there's a working vessel with its own vocabulary - bow, starboard, mooring line - and the pool tests both. When this deck runs dry, the Arizona riddles pick up right where these leave off.

Two Vocabularies, One Ship

The nautical riddles want the sailor's word, and there's no reasoning your way to it. Right-hand side is starboard. The thick rope tying the ship to the dock is a mooring line. A bow that shoots no arrows is the front of the ship. If a riddle sounds like it's quizzing terminology, it is - reveal it and keep it.

The passenger riddles work in the opposite direction: they describe an experience and expect you to recognise it. The queue with your passport before you're allowed aboard is embarkation. The sticky patch behind the ear goes on before the ship has even sailed. The orange bulky thing in every cabin closet is a life jacket nobody wants to use. These reward having been on a ship, not having studied one.

And then a third of the pool is just deck humour - the blushing buffet plate, the shuffleboard disc that quit because it kept getting pushed around. Filter to Funny and take them in a batch; they don't reward being taken seriously.

When to Deal Them

On a sea day, obviously - that's the whole use case. There is a specific stretch of afternoon on any cruise when the pool is full, the shops are shut and nobody has anything to do, and a round of these fills it better than the trivia the ship is running.

They also work before the trip. First-time cruisers genuinely benefit from arriving already knowing what embarkation means, why the horn is about to be much louder than expected, and that the seasickness patch goes on early rather than after.

For a family, the Kids filter pulls the dolphins at the bow, the ship's horn and the buffet jokes - enough to keep a child playing through the safety drill.
